Half Moon Bay State Beach is Fantastic

March 7, 2014 by Mill Rose Inn

Half Moon Bay State BeachOne of the features of Half Moon Bay, CA that keeps drawing visitors in year after year is our selection of pristine and picturesque beaches. The Mill Rose Inn is located in the heart of charming Half Moon Bay, close to the Pacific Ocean.  Half Moon Bay State Beach is an ideal place for beach lovers to visit, as it is made up of several of the loveliest beaches on the west coast. With miles of sandy coastline to explore, it can be difficult to decide where to begin your adventures, so here are a few things to know about Half Moon Bay State Beach.

Half Moon Bay State Beach spans about 4 miles along the coast of California and adds up to approximately 180 acres.  Part of the California state park system, Half Moon Bay State Beach consists of four beaches: Roosevelt Beach, Dunes Beach, Venice Beach and Francis Beach.  The park was created in 1956 and continues to be a popular destination for beach-goers to this day.

Popular activities on Half Moon Bay State Beach include sunbathing, picnicking, fishing and surfing. The water is cold year round and currents, so caution should be exercised when contemplating a swim.  The legendary Mavericks surfing location is in Half Moon Bay State Beach, where big wave surfers flock for some of the biggest waves around.  Waves at Mavericks often crest at over 25 feet and sometimes reach over 80 feet.  Taking these potentially dangerous conditions into consideration, only experienced big wave surfers should take on Mavericks, but watching surfers take on the waves from the shore or cliffs is an experience in itself.

The popular Coastside Trail offers several miles of hiking alongside Half Moon Bay State Beach.  A horse trail runs parallel to the Coastside Trail for those who want to experience Half Moon Bay State Beach on horseback.   Another location of interest is Pillar Point Harbor where commercial fishing boats launch and marine sanctuary waters can be accessed.  Marine sanctuary waters are a good place for fishing, recreational boating and wildlife watching.

Half Moon Bay State Beach is home to a variety of native California wildlife, including a colony of rare Western Snowy Plover. Other notable species include sea lions, harbor seals, elephant seals, mountain lions, gray foxes and coyotes.  The waters of Half Moon Bay State Beach are often good places for whale watching, where dolphins and whales can be spotted.

After a day on Half Moon Bay State Beach, Mill Rose Inn is the perfect place to come back and relax.  Our decadent rooms and suites offer classically elegant decor with all the modern conveniences travelers have come to expect.  Each room has its own private bath, cable television, complimentary wireless internet access and a well stocked refrigerator with complimentary beverages. Many rooms feature hand painted fireplaces and claw foot bathtubs, providing the ideal environment for unwinding after your fun in the sun.  And each stay includes a full champagne breakfast in the morning, so you’ll start each day off on the right foot.  Choosing to stay at our Half Moon Bay bed and breakfast is a wonderful way to ensure that your time in the area will be truly memorable.  Find your favorite room and begin planning your Half Moon Bay getaway today!
