The Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival Is Back for the 44th Year

August 29, 2014 by Mill Rose Inn

Half Moon Bay Pumpkin FestivalHalf Moon Bay’s biggest event of the autumn is coming up! The Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival will return for its 44th year this October 18-19. Each year Half Moon Bay becomes the World Pumpkin Capital as it celebrates the fall with a variety of festivities that include pumpkin showcases, arts, crafts, food, and live entertainment. The Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival is a tradition that you have to participate in at least one time in your life! We at the Mill Rose Inn love this yearly event and want to share some information about the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival with you!

Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival History

Now in its 44th year, the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival began in 1971, which is also when the Main Street Beautification Committee was formed in Half Moon Bay. The original goal of the festival was to raise money for the restoration and revitalization of Half Moon Bay’s Main Street. Today, the festival still celebrates the bounty of the harvest season and the area’s many pumpkin patches. While the first Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival drew a crowd of about 30,000 people over the course of the festival, today the downtown area sees scores more people during the festivities.

Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival Events

Before he festival begins during the weekend, the “kick off” event is the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off. Which sees pumpkins of more than 1,000 pounds compete to find the biggest in the land. In addition to the Weigh-Off there is an exciting schedule of events during the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival. The events include the Great Pumpkin Parade (showcasing the winning weigh-off pumpkin), a costume contest, pie eating contest, a Pumpkin Run/Walk on the Coastside Trail, and live entertainment on several stages.

Half Moon Bay Events in FallSummer may be coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean the fun stops at the Mill Rose Inn! There are several Half Moon Bay events taking place in the autumn that are most definitely worth a visit to our bed and breakfast. So, come out and enjoy the vibrant fall atmosphere at these great Half Moon Bay events.

Kings Mountain Art Fair

The Kings Mountain Art Fair  is held every Labor Day weekend in nearby Woodside, amongst the beautiful redwoods.  This is one of the Half Moon Bay events that isn’t only fun to take part in, but it also benefits the community.  Proceeds go to programs like the Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade and activities for Kings Mountain Elementary school.  In addition to the wares on display and on sale from local artisans, the Kings Mountain Art Fair is a great place to enjoy some good food in a beautiful setting.

The Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off

The precursor to the biggest and most famous of the Half Moon Bay events during the fall is the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off.  The weigh-off will be held on Main Street. The “Heavyweight Championship of Gargantuan Gourds” rewards master growers for their truly gigantic pumpkins in several categories.  The grower with the heaviest pumpkin at the event will be awarded with prize money of $6 per pound of the pumpkin.  If the winning pumpkin also defeats the world record, they’re prize will be upgraded to $30,000! Other categories include the biggest pumpkins grown in California and on the Coastside as well as most beautiful, which is judged by the audience on color, shape, and size. Come out and marvel at these spectacular gourds!

Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival

The biggest and most renowned of all the Half Moon Bay events that take place in the fall is the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival. This annual two day celebration is definitely worth a visit and the festivities promise to be just as enthralling as in previous year! The winners from the World Championship Pumpkin-Weigh Off will show off their giant gourds in a parade, and people will be able to have their photograph taken and print with one of the mammoth pumpkins.  Local artisans will showcase their work in a Made on the Coast block, and artists from far and wide will also have displays and wares for sale. Music, great food, seasonal beverages, and even a pie eating contest round out the festival.

Johnston Holiday House – Boutique & Tour

Get a bit of shopping done before the Christmas season. The historic James Johnston House is a Half Moon Bay landmark overlooking the ocean.  The Holiday House is the biggest fundraiser for keeping the property (which is on the National Register of Historic Places) in such good shape.  Christmas decor, jewelry, arts, crafts, and delectable treats will be available for purchase.  This is also the only time to tour the house in the winter months, and it will be in a rare state with beautiful Christmas trees, garlands, and wreaths decking the halls. The Holiday House Boutique & Tour takes place the first two weekends in November.
