During the summer months, the weather in Northern California is perfect for horseback riding! Half Moon Bay is alive with adventure and activity all year long, and summer is a great time for you to plan a visit. Choosing Mill Rose Inn as your destination will give you easy access to several of the areas best horse ranches. Experience Half Moon Bay’s beautiful scenery galloping on horseback along the endless coastline or riding among grassy meadows overlooking the ocean. Here are two of our favorite Half Moon Bay horseback riding ranches!

Horseback Riding on the Beach at Seahorse Ranch

Established in 1963, the Sea Horse Ranch offer quality horseback riding tours from experienced guides. Take a guided horseback ride on the beach with the friendly people of Seahorse! The ranch is located on Pacific Coast highway in Half Moon Bay. Minimum age for a horseback rider is 7 years old and the weight limit is 240 pounds. Guests must wear the appropriate attire, long pants and fully enclosed shoes, to be able to ride.

The shortest tour the Seahorse Ranch offers is a 1-hour ride down the Coastal Equestrian Trail and is perfect for first timers! You will enjoy a beach and ocean view, however, the ride does not go onto the sand. The longest tour offered is the 2-hour ride that takes you further down the Coastal Equestrian Trail, onto a bluff above the crystal clear blue ocean, down south on Poplar Beach and then back to the ranch! Mount a horse, breath in the crisp ocean air and be in awe of the spectacular coastline! Find out more at the Seahorse Ranch website, or call them at (650) 726-2362!

Blue Sky Riding Experience

Novice and experienced riders will enjoy a guided ride through the breath-taking grassland meadows and around the 400 acres of spectacular coastal hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Blue Sky Riding Experience shows you the Northern California coast at its best while sitting atop of one of their Tennessee Walking horses. Go on one of their Ocean Views and Coastal Hills Rides, which last for 3 to 4 hours, and see both mountain and sea. The ride begins at Costanoa, continues through the grassland and gradual ascent to the coastal hills. At the end, enjoy a picnic lunch while seated on a bluff overlooking the panoramic Pacific Ocean. The perfect way to spend a day in Half Moon Bay! There are 47 miles of trails for hiking with areas that provide easy strolls on paved paths to difficult steep hikes.

Holy Ghost Festival

The Holy Ghost Festival is a celebration that keeps a tradition that has existed for centuries.  The festival remembers Queen Isabel of Portugal, who left her crown at the alter of the Cathedral in Lisbon as an offering of thanks for the Holy Ghost. The reason for this giving of thanks was that her subjects on a faraway island were blessed with the appearance of a ship full of food and supplies in a time of great need after praying to the Holy Ghost.  Today, the festival includes several processions with ceremonies echoing the blessing of Isabel’s crown, dances and feasts. This year’s Holy Ghost Festival will be held on June 7th through the 9th.

Ol’ Fashioned 4th of July Parade

Each Independence Day in downtown Half Moon Bay, there is a celebration featuring a parade.  This event has plenty of small town charm and has become a summer staple in the community.  The parade includes homemade floats, bands, horse riders, classic cars, and decorated bicycles and tricycles.  Groups such as dance and theatre troupes, non-profits, and sports team also participate.

Coastside Farmers’ Market

For some great local food, one of the best things to do in Half Moon Bay this summer is a visit to the Costaside Farmers’ Market.  This farmer-directed Certified Market gives locals and visitors access to goods directly from Coastside farmers, rancheres, fishermen and culinary artisans. The Half Moon Bay location of the Coastside Farmers’ Markert is open May to December on Saturdays from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. It is located at Shoreline Station.
